The Human Rights Campaign has an audio recording of Utah State Senator Chris Buttars saying of homosexual Americans: “They’re probably the greatest threat to America going down I know of.”
I’m not going go on a rant demanding how dare Senator Buttars say such a thing. Chris Buttars, and every other American, has the right to say whatever they want. There is and should be no daring in expressing one’s opinion.
I’ll state my opinion in return, however: What Senator Chris Buttars said was just plain stupid. It’s stupid, because it doesn’t match reality. America has had homosexuality going on within its borders since its founding, probably at the same rate that homosexuality is taking place today. So, if homosexuality hasn’t destroyed the USA in over 230 years, how could it possibly be “the greatest threat to America”?
I challenge any of our readers to explain how homosexuality actually threatens them. By threatened, I don’t mean bothered, or worried, or unnerved, or offended. I mean threatened.
How does homosexuality threaten you? What actual threat is there to you from homosexuality? More generally, how does homosexuality threaten America?
In the audio recording, Senator Buttars challenges us: “What is the morals of a gay person? You can’t answer that.”
You’re right, Mr. Buttars. I can’t answer that… both because I don’t know how to properly phrase a response to a question that mixes up the singular and the plural, and because gay people are all different. One particular gay person will have one particular set of morals, which will be different from the morals of another gay person. Until you identify a particular gay person, I can’t answer your question.
Morality isn’t tied to sexual preference. There is no single morality of heterosexuality, and neither is there a single morality of homosexuality.
I’ll tell you what I think the the greatest threat to America is. I think that the greatest threat to America is stupidity. Stupidity has nearly destroyed our nation on several occasions. State Senator Buttars, you have demonstrated this stupidity quite clearly.
Please, Senator Buttars, stop threatening America. Get smart, and stop wasting your time as a public servant with private issues like who Americans choose to have consensual sex with.
